The Smart was able to sell at a premium because it was trendy, new and unique. In the intervening years we've seen the Mini plus a new breed of cheap but good quality city cars such as the Toyota Aygo, Daihatsu Charade and Chevrolet Matiz that provide extra seats for less outlay.
